Previewing Catalog Artifacts¶
Before installing a marketplace artifact, you can browse and preview its file contents directly in the web UI. This allows you to examine the code and documentation without importing anything into your collection.
How to Preview Files¶
Access the Contents Tab:
1. Open the marketplace at http://localhost:3000/marketplace
2. Find and click on any marketplace source
3. Click on a catalog entry (artifact listing) to open the modal
4. Click the Contents tab
[Screenshot: Contents tab showing file tree and preview]
File Browser Features¶
File Tree: - View complete directory structure of the artifact - Click any file to preview its contents - Expandable folders for easy navigation
Preview Panel: - Displays file contents in read-only mode - Syntax highlighting for code files (Python, TypeScript, JSON, etc.) - Line numbers for reference - Cannot edit until after import
Auto-Selection: - README files are automatically selected if available - Falls back to first markdown file if no README - Helps you quickly understand the artifact purpose
Working with Large Files¶
File Size Limits: - Files up to 1MB are fully displayed - Large files over 1MB are truncated to 10,000 lines - Truncated content is clearly marked
View Full File on GitHub: - Click "View on GitHub" button for large files - Opens repository in your browser - See complete file with GitHub's rendering
GitHub Rate Limits¶
The contents feature fetches file data directly from GitHub. Rate limits may apply:
Rate Limiting: - GitHub allows 60 requests/hour for unauthenticated users - Shows error message if limit is reached - Wait 1-2 hours before retrying
Increase Rate Limits: To fetch more files without waiting, use a personal GitHub access token:
- Create token at: https://github.com/settings/tokens
- Scopes needed:
public_repo(for public artifacts only) - Set in SkillMeat:
- Rate limit increases to 5,000 requests/hour (authenticated)
Preview Tips¶
Review Before Import: - Check artifact structure and organization - Look for README or documentation - Verify code quality and style - Check dependencies and requirements
Common Files to Review:
- README.md - Overview and instructions
- requirements.txt or package.json - Dependencies
- License files (LICENSE, COPYING)
- Configuration files (setup.py, pyproject.toml, etc.)
- Source code organization
Example Workflow: 1. Search marketplace for Python automation tools 2. Click on a candidate artifact 3. Preview the Contents tab 4. Read README to understand capabilities 5. Check requirements.txt to see dependencies 6. If satisfied, click Install to add to collection
Limitations¶
Cannot Edit in Preview: - All files are read-only in preview mode - Editing is only possible after importing - This prevents accidental modifications
Network Dependent: - Requires GitHub connectivity - Large artifacts may take time to load - Rate limits may prevent previews if exceeded
Troubleshooting Preview Issues¶
"Rate limit exceeded" Error
If you see this error, GitHub rate limit was hit: - Wait 1-2 hours and retry - Or, set up authentication with personal token (see above)
File content won't load
If a file fails to load: - Check GitHub connectivity - Try clicking "View on GitHub" instead - Refresh and try again
Large files load slowly
If preview is taking time: - File size may be large (over 500KB) - Consider viewing truncated version - Use "View on GitHub" for full file
Ratings and Reviews¶
View Ratings:
# See overall rating
- 4.8/5.0 (1,200+ ratings)
- Distribution of star ratings (visual histogram)
- Recent reviews (newest first)
Filter Reviews: - Most helpful - Most recent - Highest rated - Lowest rated

Managing Marketplace Artifacts¶
Re-importing Artifacts¶
If you need to refresh an imported artifact from its upstream source (e.g., to get the latest version or recover a corrupted artifact), use the Force Re-import feature.
From the Web UI: 1. Open the marketplace source containing the artifact 2. Click on the imported catalog entry to open the detail modal 3. Click the kebab menu (⋮) in the top-right corner 4. Select Force Re-import 5. Optionally toggle "Keep existing deployments" to preserve deployment records 6. Click Re-import to confirm
What Happens: - Downloads fresh content from the upstream GitHub source - Overwrites any local changes to the artifact - Updates the catalog entry with a new import timestamp - Optionally preserves deployment records (if toggled)
Use Cases: - Artifact files are corrupted or missing - You want to discard local changes and reset to upstream - The catalog shows "imported" but the artifact was deleted
Note: When you delete an imported artifact from your collection, the catalog entry status is automatically reset to "new", allowing you to re-import it normally. The Force Re-import feature is for updating artifacts that still exist in your collection.
Cross-Modal Navigation¶
When you import an artifact from a marketplace source, SkillMeat creates a direct link between the catalog entry and the imported artifact in your collection. This enables seamless navigation between the marketplace view and your collection.
Navigating from Catalog to Collection:
- Open a marketplace source containing imported artifacts
- Click on an imported catalog entry (shown with "Imported" badge)
- Click the Collections tab to see which collections contain this artifact
- Click any collection card to navigate directly to that artifact in your collection
How It Works:
Each import operation generates a unique import_id that links the catalog entry to the artifact in your collection. This enables:
- Precise matching - Direct lookup by import ID rather than fuzzy name matching
- Reliable navigation - Works even when multiple artifacts share similar names
- Batch tracking - All artifacts imported in a single operation share the same import ID
Legacy Imports:
Artifacts imported before this feature was introduced use fallback name-based matching: - Search matches by artifact name and type - Limited to top 50 results - May require manual verification if names are ambiguous
Note: Re-importing an artifact will generate a new import_id, enabling direct navigation for previously imported artifacts.
Viewing Import Information:
The import_id is visible in the artifact's metadata when viewing details in your collection. Use this to verify the link between a catalog entry and its imported artifact.
